In 2017 a couple of musicians connected on a popular dating app and have been makin’ music ever since. Emitting sounds of jazz-inspired folk and country, New Zealand based musical group mākin combines captivating vocal songs with intricate acoustic compositions—creating flowing melodies and lively rhythms.
With an enchanting vocal purity and beholding range, singer-songwriter Vicki-leigh Fryer delivers powerful lyrics—poetic themes of love, mental health and self-empowerment through life’s lessons. Singing since an early age, Fryer has performed vocals throughout Australasia, working with numerous artists, appearing on multiple records.
Guitarist and songwriter Matt Wilson, blends contemporary structures and influences, dominated with percussive techniques, building soundscapes of haunting tones and dynamic rhythms. Over the past 10 years the musician and producer has worked extensively with artists internationally—on stage and in studios.
Since inception, mākin have been performing at live venues, events and festivals, often collaborating with renowned fiddler Jamie Relton. During 2020 they began recording their debut studio album at Southland’s Meadow Sounds studio set for release in 2021.
